Herry Sanusi

"I was born in Sapeken, Madura on May 2, 1980. My father was a sailor from Sulawesi Island. He traveled all over Indonesia until he met my mother in Madura and married her. My family moved to Bali when I was three years old.

"I started my education in Bali, went to university in Yogyakarta, on the island of Java, and then returned home to my family in Bali.

"My parents own several arts shops. When we came of age they entrusted my older sister and me to each look after one of their shops. This has proven to be one of the greatest and best challenges of my life so far, because I get to fill the shop with my own creations!

"At first, it was difficult for me to stand on my own, to be recognize for my own artistic merits, because my style was so connected to my parents' own legacy. This prompted me to work hard to create original designs. I wanted to prove to our world here that I could be as good as my parents - and perhaps even a little better! Thank God my peers have finally accepted and admired my work!"
