"This art form is like a breath of fresh air in an industrialized world and it also offers me the opportunity to try new things every day."
"I'm Liz from Guatemala, and I'm a caring, open and responsible person and somewhat absentminded – I'm always getting into some kind of funny trouble, so I've learned to laugh at myself. I’ve also weathered some hard times in my life which I've managed to overcome quite well. I know there are people that have had to face worse things so I don’t believe in complaining or allowing yourself to breakdown.
"I studied fashion design and I decided to work with the beautiful textile fabrics of my country so I started experimenting. I made several designs which I constantly modified so they'd look nicer. It took me quite a while to design and selects the materials before arriving at the final product.
"When I finally had the design I wanted I showed it to Yesenia, who I work with. She liked it very much, and that motivated me to keep developing this type of designs. Yesenia is great, she’s a quick learner and she is now designing too. I also work with my husband, who is in charge of graphic images and I design and craft.
"We live in Cuyotenango, and many girls get pregnant by the time they're 15 years old, and many don't even get to finish primary school. My dream is therefore to grow this venture in order to support my community and these women by offering a space where they can learn a craft and earn a living, without having to get married for the sole purpose of having someone support them financially.
"I would also like to help women who are not working because of injuries or disabilities suffered from accidents. I'd love to have the opportunity to empower them by teaching them this craft.
"I don't ask for much, do I?
"I place great value in the work that is done by hand, especially when they are done with love and dedication. This art form is like a breath of fresh air in an industrialized world and it offers me the opportunity to try new things every day.
"It's been a lovely experience to be working on my own, and it has been very gratifying. However it's not been easy at all. I've encountered many obstacles and people who don’t believe that this is a worthwhile job and don't place any value in it.
"But I love a challenge and they won't put me down. I do not give that easily.
"Through this art I want to create a type of work that is just and dignified. I want to innovate our rich cultural heritage with new products and designs, so I'm giving it my best effort to avoid losing the value of handcrafted, high quality work."
