Rattiya Mahawan

"My name is Rattiya Mahawan and I was born in Chiang Mai. I have one sister and two brothers, but my father passed away in 1988 and my sister died in an accident in 1996. So today it is my two brothers and my mother in the family.

"My family would rather not adapt an opulent style, but everybody in my family is diligent and likes to work. We don't often go out for dinner except on special occasions such as my mother's birthday and my brothers' birthdays – most of the time we stay with our jobs.

"When I was young, I would rather accompany my mother to work than play with my friends, because her workplace was so much more interesting. I was sometimes able to help my mother, and earned a little money from my special job there.

"I majored in art because the arts taught me to be calm and polite. When I graduated, I worked in a computer company for two years, and then worked at a painting house for two years. But these jobs are not my life, so they made me bored.

"I've taken courses in cotton painting and found that I like this work. It inspires me to create new images. My designs are created from my own imagination, combining sewing, painting and designing. Perhaps they are not great styles but they come from my willingness and love of my work.

"I believe that my paintings and the beauty of cotton will bring happiness to others who see and love my works."
