Katherine Schiefer

"My full name is Katherine Claudia Schiefer Podestá, and I was born in Lima on November 15th, 1970. My brother and I grew up in a household where art reigned, thanks to my mother. My father, who is German, instilled in us his deep admiration for Peru's ancestral cultures.

"My initial approach to art was through painting and its different styles. The school I went to had a policy of stimulating students' talents in their different manifestations. I decided to study design at the Peruvian Institute of Publicity, where I learned to communicate concepts and ideas through color and images, as well as playing with volumes and weights to achieve harmony in a visual whole.

"I am interested in music, visual arts, literature, science, and politics. As you can see I am curious about everything that surrounds me, which I believe nurtures us. I feel at home when I come into contact with nature, be it the countryside or the coast, away from the big city vortex.

"I approach my work guided by my social conscience, because I feel that including our ancestors' weaves with our modern world means including a piece of history, heritage and tradition. It means mixing idiosyncrasies – the uniqueness of Andean cultures with occidental ones.

"I am moved by a desire to promote Peru's textile legacy. By mixing and fusing we are achieving incredible results in Peru, be it in the fashion world, gastronomy and music, amongst others. This way we can open borders and cater for the most demanding of tastes.

"I try to transmit everything that is contrary to what is industrial and massive. Each piece I make reflects the art of patience, the type of patience of those who approach life without pauses nor hurries.

"My greatest challenge has been to combine motherhood with my desire to develop my art. To find myself without distractions in order to create and finish what I start – from the first design to the last stitch.

"I would like to remind Novica customers of the importance of keeping in touch with art, because it is of great benefit to us. It has a soothing effect as the artist invites us through his art to pause and offers us a unique moment of pure love, love of art."
